Front: King Norodom Sihamoni (born 1953), current King of Cambodia since 2004. He succeeded his father King Norodom Sihanouk and is depicted in profile on the right side of the note. The Royal Arms of Cambodia appears at center left, featuring the royal crown above a shield with traditional Khmer motifs. The denomination 500 riels is displayed prominently in Khmer numerals and script.

Back: Kizuna Bridge (Neak Loeung Bridge) spanning the Mekong River in Kandal Province, Cambodia. This cable-stayed bridge was constructed with Japanese aid and opened in 2015, replacing the old ferry crossing. The scene shows modern traffic including cars crossing the bridge, with the distinctive tower and cable structure prominent. The Independence Monument silhouette appears at right, and palm trees line the roadway, representing Cambodia's modern infrastructure development.

The story

Background & history

The 2014 series of Cambodian riels introduced updated security features and modernized designs while retaining King Norodom Sihamoni's portrait on all denominations. This 500 riel note reflects Cambodia's post-conflict economic recovery and infrastructure modernization, with the Kizuna Bridge symbolizing international cooperation and development. The riel was reintroduced in 1980 after being abolished by the Khmer Rouge regime (1975–1979), and has circulated alongside the US dollar in Cambodia's dual-currency economy. The National Bank of Cambodia continues to issue these notes as legal tender.
