Front: Portraits of a Gaoshan man and Manchu woman, representing two of China's ethnic minority groups. The Gaoshan (高山族) are indigenous peoples of Taiwan, while the Manchu (满族) are the ethnic group that founded the Qing Dynasty. This design was part of the People's Republic of China's Fourth Series effort to showcase the country's ethnic diversity across its banknote denominations, with different minority groups featured on each value.

Back: National Emblem of the People's Republic of China at center, featuring Tiananmen Gate beneath five stars, encircled by sheaves of grain and a cogwheel. The year 1980 appears below the emblem. The text includes the bank name 'ZHONGGUO RENMIN YINHANG' in pinyin, with multilingual denominations in Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur, and Zhuang scripts along the bottom edge, reflecting China's linguistic diversity.

The story

Background & history

This 1 Jiao note belongs to the Fourth Series of the Renminbi, issued between 1987 and 1997 (though dated 1980). The series was the first to be developed entirely by Chinese designers and technicians without foreign assistance. It introduced enhanced security features and emphasized ethnic unity by featuring portraits of China's ethnic minorities. The Fourth Series was gradually withdrawn from circulation starting in 2018, with complete demonetization on May 1, 2018. This series bridged China's transition from a planned economy to market reforms under Deng Xiaoping.
