Front: Traditional carved wooden mask from the Democratic Republic of Congo, representing the rich artistic heritage of Congolese peoples. The elaborate geometric patterns and stylized features are characteristic of Central African ceremonial and ritual masks that play important roles in cultural and spiritual practices. The mask motif has appeared on Congolese currency as a symbol of national identity and cultural continuity since independence, representing the diverse ethnic groups and their traditional arts.

Back: A fishing village (un village de pêcheurs) on the banks of the Congo River (au bord du Fleuve Congo), depicting traditional thatched-roof dwellings on stilts and fishermen in dugout canoes. The scene illustrates the traditional riverine lifestyle that has sustained Congolese communities for centuries along the Congo River and its tributaries. The inscription 'MAKUMI TANO' (fifty in Lingala) appears at lower right, acknowledging one of the four national languages of the DRC.

The story

Background & history

Part of the Fourth series of Congolese Franc notes issued from 2007, following the currency's reintroduction in 1997 after the Second Congo War. The 50 Francs denomination was the second-lowest value note in circulation. This series featured traditional cultural motifs and scenes of daily life, moving away from portraits of political leaders. The note was dated 31.07.2007 and remained in circulation until replaced by newer designs in 2013. The use of Lingala alongside French reflects the multilingual nature of the DRC.
