Front: General José de San Martín (1778–1850), Argentine general and primary leader of the southern part of South America's wars of independence from Spain. He led the liberation armies across the Andes to Chile and Peru, is regarded as Argentina's national hero, and appears on multiple Argentine currency series. The note bears his title 'Gral SAN MARTIN' and shows him in military dress.
Back: Casa Rosada (the Pink House), the executive mansion and office of the President of Argentina, located in Buenos Aires at Plaza de Mayo. The building has served as the seat of government since 1862 and is one of the most iconic political landmarks in Argentina. Background & history
This 1,000 peso note belongs to the Peso Argentino series issued from 1983 to 1985 during a period of severe hyperinflation. The Peso Argentino replaced the Peso Ley 18.188 at a rate of 10,000:1 in June 1983. Due to continued inflation reaching over 1,000% annually, the Peso Argentino was replaced by the Austral on June 14, 1985 at a rate of 1,000:1. The series is characterized by portraits of national heroes and landmarks, printed by Casa de Moneda.
