Front: Matías Ramón Mella (1816–1864), Dominican military leader and one of the Founding Fathers of the Dominican Republic. Along with Juan Pablo Duarte and Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, he formed the secret society La Trinitaria and fired the famous trabucazo (blunderbuss shot) at the Puerta de la Misericordia on February 27, 1844, signaling the beginning of Dominican independence from Haiti. He served as President of the Republic in 1864 and is honored as one of the three liberators of the nation.

Back: Altar de la Patria (Altar of the Homeland) in Santo Domingo, a white marble mausoleum built between 1948 and 1976 to house the remains of the three Founding Fathers: Juan Pablo Duarte, Matías Ramón Mella, and Francisco del Rosario Sánchez. The monument, designed by Italian sculptor Giovanni Turini, stands as the most sacred national memorial of the Dominican Republic and is guarded by an honor guard 24 hours a day. The inscription reads 'ALTAR DE LA PATRIA'.
