Front: The guanaco (Lama guanicoe), a wild South American camelid native to Patagonia and the Andean regions. The guanaco is the ancestor of the domesticated llama and represents Argentina's native wildlife. It is one of the largest wild mammals in South America and plays a significant role in Patagonian ecosystems. Blue anémona patagónica (Patagonian anemone) flowers appear at left, native to southern Argentina.

Back: Patagonian steppe landscape showing the characteristic terrain of southern Argentina with mountains, sparse vegetation, and a guanaco in its natural habitat. The scene depicts the vast semi-arid grasslands of Argentine Patagonia. A map of continental Argentina appears at right with the national motto 'en unión y libertad' (in union and liberty). The Argentine coat of arms is displayed, featuring the Sun of May and clasped hands holding a liberty pole.

The story

Background & history

Part of Argentina's Native Animals series introduced in 2016, which replaced historical figures with native fauna on banknotes. This design shift represented a move to celebrate Argentina's natural heritage and biodiversity. The 20 peso denomination featuring the guanaco was first issued in 2017. The series includes other denominations featuring native animals such as the Andean condor, taruca, hornero, jaguar, and Southern right whale.
