Front: Siti Hinggil Kraton Yogyakarta, the raised pavilion at the main gate of the Sultan's palace in Yogyakarta, one of Indonesia's most important royal and cultural sites. The structure serves as a throne pavilion where the Sultan addresses the public and has been central to Javanese court ceremonies since the 18th century. It represents Indonesian royal heritage and cultural continuity.

Back: General Sudirman (1916-1950), Indonesian military officer and national hero who served as the first commander-in-chief of the Indonesian Armed Forces during the National Revolution. Despite suffering from tuberculosis, he led guerrilla warfare against Dutch colonial forces during the Indonesian National Revolution (1945-1949), refusing to surrender even when the capital fell. He is revered as the father of the Indonesian military and symbol of dedication to independence.

The story

Background & history

This note belongs to the 1980 series issued by Bank Indonesia, which remained in circulation until the 1992 series replaced it. The series featured Indonesian national heroes and important cultural landmarks. The 1000 rupiah denomination was a mid-range note during this period. Printed by Perum Percetakan Uang RI (the Indonesian state mint), these notes featured traditional security elements including watermarks, security threads, and intricate guilloche patterns. The series was eventually demonetized as Indonesia modernized its currency designs in the 1990s.
