Front: Queen Elizabeth II (b. 1926, reigned 1952–2022), depicted in the mid-1970s wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara and Queen Alexandra's Wedding Necklace. As British monarch, she is also head of state of Jersey, a British Crown Dependency. The Jersey coat of arms appears at center top, displaying three gold leopards on a red shield. The design includes stylized floral elements (Jersey lily and wheat) in the borders.

Back: The Death of Major Peirson, 6 January 1781, after the painting by John Singleton Copley (1738–1815). This dramatic scene depicts the Battle of Jersey, when British forces under Major Francis Peirson defeated a French invasion attempt. Peirson was mortally wounded at the moment of victory in the Royal Square, St. Helier. The painting, completed in 1783, is one of the most famous depictions of this pivotal moment in Jersey's history and hangs in the Tate Britain.

The story

Background & history

Series C of Jersey banknotes, issued 1976–1988 by the States of Jersey. This was the third series of modern Jersey pound notes, featuring Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and historical scenes from Jersey's past on the reverse. The £1 note depicts the Battle of Jersey, a significant event in the island's history when local militia and British forces repelled the last attempt to invade British territory during the American Revolutionary War. The series was printed by Thomas De La Rue and withdrawn in 1988 when replaced by Series D notes.
