Front: Muammar Gaddafi (1942–2011), Libyan revolutionary and political leader who ruled Libya from 1969 to 2011. He led the coup that overthrew King Idris I and styled himself as 'Brother Leader' of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. The note depicts Gaddafi in traditional Libyan dress with the Pyramids of Giza visible in the background, symbolizing pan-Arab unity and African connections. This series was issued during his rule and withdrawn following his overthrow in the 2011 Libyan Civil War.

Back: The flag of the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya (1977–2011), Libya's all-green banner under Gaddafi's rule, shown with white doves in flight. The green flag was unique among national flags in being a single solid color without emblem, representing Gaddafi's Green Book ideology and Islamic symbolism. The doves represent peace and freedom aspirations. A palm tree appears at left.

The story

Background & history

The Fourth issue of Libyan dinars was introduced under Muammar Gaddafi's rule and circulated from 2004 to 2013. This series prominently featured Gaddafi's portrait, which was unprecedented in earlier Libyan currency issues. The notes were withdrawn from circulation following the 2011 revolution that ended Gaddafi's 42-year rule, though they remained legal tender for a transition period. The Central Bank of Libya subsequently issued new designs without Gaddafi's image. These notes represent the final years of the Jamahiriya period and are historically significant as artifacts of Gaddafi's personality cult.
