Front: Traditional Malawian village scene depicting food security through grain pounding. Women in traditional dress are shown pounding grain with pestles and mortars outside a thatched-roof dwelling, with a child nearby. This image represents subsistence agriculture and food security, central themes in Malawi's economy and culture. The inscription 'FOOD SECURITY' appears beneath the scene, emphasizing the Reserve Bank's focus on economic development priorities in the early post-independence decades.

Back: Lake Malawi fisherman in traditional dugout canoe with palm trees along the lakeshore. Lake Malawi (formerly Lake Nyasa) is one of the African Great Lakes and a defining feature of Malawi's geography, economy, and culture. Fishing in Lake Malawi provides livelihood for thousands and is a major protein source for the nation. The scene symbolizes traditional economic activity and Malawi's natural heritage. The story

Background & history

This note shows a significant denomination mismatch: the front displays '5 KWACHA' while the back shows '1 KWACHA' (K1). This is a mismatched pair from the Reserve Bank of Malawi Act 1989 series, issued starting 1st May 1992. The series emphasized themes of food security, agriculture, and traditional economic activities during Malawi's transition to multiparty democracy under President Hastings Kamuzu Banda. The Malawi Kwacha was introduced in 1971 to replace the Malawi pound. This particular series was gradually replaced through the 1990s and 2000s with enhanced-security designs, and these notes were eventually demonetized around 2012 when polymer notes were introduced.
