Front: Tobacco harvesting scene showing two farmers working in a tobacco field. Tobacco has been Malawi's primary agricultural export and cash crop since independence in 1964, accounting for over half of the country's export earnings through much of its modern history. The word 'TOBACCO' is explicitly labeled beneath the agricultural vignette, emphasizing the crop's central role in the national economy. The K1 denomination markings appear in all four corners with geometric guilloche patterns in purple, brown, and green.

Back: Reserve Bank of Malawi headquarters building in Lilongwe, the central bank established in 1965 following independence. The building is shown as a multi-story modern structure. At right, a portrait of a Malawian woman wearing a traditional feathered headdress represents the cultural heritage and people of Malawi. At left are images of Lake Malawi fish species (including chambo/tilapia), reflecting the importance of Lake Malawi's fisheries to the national economy and diet. The serial number BP0982016 appears at top left, with the date 1st January 2019 below the governor's signature.

The story

Background & history

This note belongs to the 2012 series introduced by the Reserve Bank of Malawi, with this specific specimen dated 1st January 2019 as printed on the reverse. The series continued Malawi's tradition of featuring agricultural themes on its currency, with the 20 Kwacha note specifically highlighting tobacco cultivation—the country's most important cash crop since colonial times. Malawi gained independence from Britain in 1964 and established the Reserve Bank of Malawi in 1965. The Kwacha (meaning 'dawn' in Chichewa) replaced the Malawian pound in 1971 at a rate of 2 kwacha = 1 pound. This series features improved security features including a security thread, microprinting, and see-through registration elements. The 2019 dated notes were issued during a period of monetary policy reform as Malawi worked to stabilize its currency and manage inflation.
