Front: The National Monument (Tugu Peringatan Negara) in Kuala Lumpur, a bronze sculpture group designed by Felix de Weldon and unveiled in 1966 to commemorate those who died in Malaysia's struggle against communist insurgency during the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960). The monument depicts seven soldiers in heroic poses representing leadership, suffering, unity, vigilance, strength, courage, and sacrifice. It stands 15.54 meters tall and is one of the world's largest bronze free-standing sculpture groups. The note also features the mouse deer (kancil) in the ornamental seal at left, a traditional symbol in Malay folklore representing cleverness.

Back: Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad (1895-1960), first Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Supreme King) of independent Malaya, serving from 1957 to 1960. He was also the Sultan of Negeri Sembilan. His reign marked the transition from British colonial rule to full independence, and he played a ceremonial but symbolically vital role in the establishment of the modern Malaysian constitutional monarchy. The portrait shows him in traditional royal regalia with ornate headgear.

The story

Background & history

This is part of Bank Negara Malaysia's fifth series, issued between 1986 and 1989. These notes were printed by Thomas De La Rue and featured enhanced security features compared to earlier series. The fifth series was replaced by the sixth series beginning in 1996, with full withdrawal by 1999. The denomination 'LIMA RINGGIT' appears in both Malay and Jawi script. The serial number format 'NF1401925' follows the standard prefix-number structure used by Bank Negara Malaysia. No documented serial-year encoding is known for this series. The note depicts important symbols of Malaysian nationhood: the Yang di-Pertuan Agong representing constitutional monarchy, and the National Monument representing the sacrifice of those who fought for independence and national unity.
