Front: Ladi Kwali (c. 1925–1984), renowned Nigerian potter from the Gwari people (Kaduna State). She was the first woman in Nigeria to become internationally recognized for her ceramic artistry, combining traditional Gwari coil-building techniques with modern studio pottery methods. Her work is held in collections worldwide including the British Museum. She is depicted seated at work, shaping a decorated pottery vessel with traditional tools, wearing traditional headwrap and dress. The caption reads 'LADI KWALI (POTTERY WORKS)' at the base of the vignette.

Back: Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa (1912–1966), Nigeria's first and only Prime Minister, serving from independence in 1960 until his assassination in the 1966 military coup. A teacher, politician and founding father of modern Nigeria, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1960. He was a moderate leader who worked to unite Nigeria's diverse ethnic and religious groups during the early years of independence, and remains one of the nation's most honoured statesmen.

The story

Background & history

This note belongs to Nigeria's polymer banknote series introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria beginning in 2007 to combat counterfeiting and improve durability in Nigeria's tropical climate. The 20 naira polymer note was issued with the 2018 signature combination of Governor Godwin Emefiele (in office 2014–2023) and Director of Currency Operations Olufe Sanyaolu. The front honours Ladi Kwali, celebrating Nigerian indigenous craft and the role of women in Nigerian culture and economy. The back honours Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, founding Prime Minister. The design includes advanced security features typical of polymer substrates: transparent window with coat of arms, see-through register elements, and optically variable ink. Nigeria's polymer series is part of ongoing currency modernization while maintaining the naira as legal tender since its introduction in 1973 (replacing the Nigerian pound).
