Front: Stylized medieval coin of Prince Mieszko I (c. 930–992), the first historical ruler of Poland who converted to Christianity in 966 and established the Polish state. The coin image represents Poland's earliest numismatic heritage and the foundation of Polish statehood. The text 'DZIESIĘĆ ZŁOTYCH' (Ten Złotych) appears below, with decorative patterns and security features throughout.

Back: Prince Mieszko I (c. 930–992), first historical ruler of Poland and founder of the Polish state. He united Polish tribes under Christian rule through his baptism in 966, establishing the Piast dynasty and bringing Poland into the community of Christian European nations. His portrait appears in profile, crowned, representing the beginning of Polish sovereignty and the thousand-year anniversary commemorated in Polish culture. The note is dated '25 MARCA 1994 r.' (March 25, 1994) and bears the serial number FR2744229.

The story

Background & history

This note belongs to the 1994 Series issued after Poland's currency redenomination of 10,000:1 in 1995 (though dated 1994). The new złoty (PLN) replaced the old złoty that had suffered severe hyperinflation in the early 1990s. This series features medieval Polish rulers and historical figures. The back denomination shows '20' złotych while the front shows '10 złotych' — this is an educational/specimen set showing both the 10 and 20 złotych designs together (the images appear to be mismatched: the front is from a 10 złotych note, the back from a 20 złotych note). The 1994 series was gradually withdrawn and demonetized by December 31, 2010, as newer polymer and enhanced-security paper notes were introduced. Mieszko I was chosen to represent Poland's founding and conversion to Christianity, a pivotal moment in Polish and European history.
