Where & when
What's on the note
Front: Medieval Polish coin seal (likely from the Piast dynasty era) at center, featuring intricate heraldic designs. The front displays the denomination '20 DWADZIEŚCIA ZŁOTYCH' with security guilloche patterns and the notation 'BANKNOTY EMITOWANE PRZEZ NARODOWY BANK POLSKI SĄ PRAWNYM ŚRODKIEM PŁATNICZYM W POLSCE' (Banknotes issued by the National Bank of Poland are legal tender in Poland). This design reflects the historical continuity of Polish statehood through its medieval coinage traditions.
Back: Karol Świerczewski (1897–1947), Polish-Soviet general known by the nom de guerre 'Walter,' who commanded International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War and served as a general in the Polish People's Army after World War II. He held various military positions in Soviet and Polish communist forces and was killed in an ambush in 1947. The note bears the date 'WARSZAWA, 1 GRUDNIA 1988' (Warsaw, December 1, 1988) and displays the Polish coat of arms (White Eagle). Świerczewski was a controversial figure, honoured by the communist government but later re-evaluated after Poland's democratic transition.

Background & history
This note belongs to the final series of the Polish People's Republic (1975–1989 design family), issued during the late communist period. The 50 złotych denomination dated December 1, 1988 was among the last banknotes printed before the political transformation of 1989. These notes circulated during a period of high inflation and economic crisis that ultimately led to the Balcerowicz Plan reforms. The currency was replaced following the denomination in 1995, when 10,000 old złotych were exchanged for 1 new złoty (PLN). Karol Świerczewski's appearance on currency was part of the communist government's programme of honouring socialist heroes; after 1989, his legacy became subject to historical reassessment. The front features a stylized medieval Polish coin, connecting communist-era currency to deeper historical traditions of Polish sovereignty.
