Where & when
What's on the note
Front: Rural agricultural scene depicting a Somali woman in traditional dress leading a laden donkey, with banana plants and traditional farming activity in the background. This motif represents Somaliland's agricultural economy and pastoral traditions following its declaration of independence from Somalia in 1991. The note was issued by the self-declared Republic of Somaliland (not internationally recognized) as part of its effort to establish an independent monetary system.
Back: Greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), a large antelope species native to the Horn of Africa region, shown in profile with its distinctive spiral horns. The kudu is an iconic wildlife species of the region and represents Somaliland's natural heritage and biodiversity. The back also features the text 'HARGEYSA 1994', referencing Hargeisa, the capital city of Somaliland.

Background & history
This 5 Shilling note is from the first series issued by Somaliland following its unilateral declaration of independence from Somalia on May 18, 1991. The Somaliland Shilling was introduced in 1994 to replace the Somali Shilling in the self-declared republic's territory. The note features text in both English and Somali (Latin script) as well as Arabic script. Despite Somaliland's functioning government and separate currency, it remains unrecognized internationally as a sovereign state. These early 1994-dated notes were printed with 'HARGEYSA 1994' on the reverse. The series was later replaced by new designs in 2011. The serial number format uses a prefix of letters followed by digits.
