The story

Background & history

🎉 Commemorating Year 2000 Millennium.

This is a highly unusual double-denomination note from Suriname's Millennium Series (2000), with 10 gulden printed on the front and 25 gulden on the reverse. The series was issued by the Centrale Bank van Suriname to commemorate the year 2000 and celebrate the nation's natural heritage, featuring native flowers, fauna, and architectural landmarks. The Surinamese guilder (gulden) was replaced by the Surinamese dollar on January 1, 2004, at a rate of 1 dollar = 1000 guilders, making this series the final guilder issue. The note text includes 'NADRUK VERBODEN - SURINAAMS WETBOEK VAN STRAFRECHT - ARTIKEL 200' (reproduction forbidden under Surinamese Penal Code Article 200). The dual-denomination format is exceptionally rare in modern banknote design and reflects experimental approaches during the transition period before currency reform.
