Front: Grand National Assembly of Turkey building (Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi) in Ankara, completed in 1961 and designed by architect Clemens Holzmeister. The building serves as the seat of Turkey's parliament and is shown with its distinctive modernist facade featuring vertical columns. The allegorical statue at left represents the Turkish nation. The note displays '50000 ELLİ BİN TÜRK LİRASI' (50,000 Turkish Lira) with Islamic geometric patterns and Ottoman-style decorative motifs.

Back: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938), founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey, who led the Turkish War of Independence and instituted sweeping political, social, and economic reforms that transformed Turkey into a modern secular nation-state. The note states '14 OCAK 1970 TARİH VE 1211 SAYILI KANUNA GÖRE ÇIKARILMIŞTIR' (Issued according to Law No. 1211 dated 14 January 1970), indicating the legal authority for this currency series. The denomination is '250000 İKİYÜZELLİ BİN TÜRK LİRASI' (250,000 Turkish Lira).

The story

Background & history

This note belongs to Turkey's 7th Emission Group (1984–1997), issued during a period of severe hyperinflation that necessitated ever-higher denominations. The legal text references Law No. 1211 of 14 January 1970, which established the framework for Turkish banknote issuance. The front denomination is 50,000 lira while the back shows 250,000 lira, indicating this is a mismatched pair—two different denominations from the same design series. The 50,000 lira (P-204) was introduced in 1989, while the 250,000 lira (P-207) was introduced in 1992. Both feature the same architectural motif (Grand National Assembly building) on the obverse and Atatürk portrait on the reverse, following the standard design pattern of Turkish currency. These notes were withdrawn and demonetized during the 2005 revaluation when the New Turkish Lira (YTL) replaced the old lira at a rate of 1:1,000,000.
