Front: The front of this note features traditional Islamic geometric patterns and ornamental designs typical of Uzbek decorative arts. The design incorporates the ration coupon format used during the transition from Soviet currency to the independent Uzbek som, reflecting the economic challenges of the newly independent nation.

Back: The State Emblem of Uzbekistan at left, featuring the mythical Huma bird with outstretched wings, symbolizing happiness and freedom. The emblem includes cotton plants and wheat sheaves representing the nation's agricultural base, with a rising sun over mountains and the word 'O'ZBEKISTON' in the center. The large ornate numeral '5' at right indicates the denomination. Text in Uzbek Cyrillic script states the legal tender clause.

The story

Background & history

This 5 som note belongs to the first series of Uzbekistan's national currency, introduced on July 1, 1994, replacing the transitional som-coupons that had been used since late 1993. The Central Bank of Uzbekistan issued this series shortly after independence from the Soviet Union (1991). The design reflects the nation's Islamic heritage and newly established state symbols. These small denominations were eventually phased out due to inflation, with Uzbekistan undergoing significant monetary reforms in subsequent years.
