The story

Background & history

This note belongs to the 1991 series issued by the State Bank of Vietnam (Ngân Hàng Nhà Nước Việt Nam) following Vietnam's economic reforms. The 1991 series was printed with the year '1991' clearly visible on the reverse. This series circulated during a period of significant economic transition as Vietnam opened to market reforms while maintaining socialist political structure. The 5,000 đồng denomination was a mid-range note during this period of relatively high inflation. The series was gradually replaced beginning in 2003 with the introduction of polymer notes featuring updated designs and enhanced security features. These paper notes were withdrawn from circulation as the newer polymer series was rolled out through the 2000s.
