Where & when
What's on the note
Front: Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja), the national bird of Panama and the largest raptor in the Americas, shown perched; the note identifies the specimen as photographed at Canaima National Park. The inscription 'Salto Ucaima y Tepuyes Venado y Kurun, Parque Nacional Canaima' references specific locations and tepui formations in Venezuela's UNESCO World Heritage site. This note is part of Venezuela's 2016 monetary reconversion, where the original 2000 Bolívares denomination was overprinted to represent 20 Bolívares following the removal of three zeros from the currency during hyperinflation.
Back: General Rafael Urdaneta (1788–1845), Venezuelan military leader and hero of the wars of independence against Spain. He served as the last president of Gran Colombia (1830–1831) after Simón Bolívar's resignation, and was one of Bolívar's most trusted generals. The portrait shows him in full military dress uniform with medals and decorations. The date 'OCTUBRE-29-1979' printed on the note references October 29, 1979, the date this 20 Bolívares design series was originally authorized, though this specific overprinted note was issued in 2016.

Background & history
🎉 Commemorating Monetary reconversion overprint 2000 Bolívares → 20 Bolívares.
This is a transitional note from Venezuela's 2016 monetary reconversion, when the Bolívar Fuerte underwent redenomination by removing three zeros. Original 2000 Bolívares notes from earlier series were overprinted with '20' to circulate as 20 Bolívares. The back displays 'OCTUBRE-29-1979', the authorization date of the original 20 Bolívares design featuring Rafael Urdaneta, which was part of Venezuela's long-running series. The front was redesigned with wildlife imagery (the Harpy Eagle) as part of Venezuela's efforts to feature national natural heritage. Serial number A12055427 is visible on the back. This reconversion was short-lived; in 2018, Venezuela implemented another redenomination (removing five zeros) to create the Bolívar Soberano, demonetizing these notes. The hyperinflationary period of 2016–2018 saw Venezuela issue increasingly high denominations, making these overprinted transitional notes artifacts of extreme monetary instability.
