Background & history
Part of the third Cruzeiro series issued by the Banco Central do Brasil during the early to mid-1980s, a period of high inflation in Brazil. The Cruzeiro (third) circulated from 1970 to 1986, when it was replaced by the Cruzado at a rate of 1000:1 as part of the Plano Cruzado economic reform. The 1000 Cruzeiros note was among the higher denominations needed as inflation eroded purchasing power. This series featured prominent Brazilian historical figures and was printed on paper with security threads and watermarks.
