Front

Bartolomé Mitre (1821–1906), Argentine statesman, military leader, author, and the first constitutional president of unified Argentina (1862–1868). He founded the influential newspaper La Nación in 1870 and played a crucial role in organizing the modern Argentine state. His portrait appears with his name inscribed above. The Austral symbol (₳) appears at left with the denomination.

Back

Allegorical figure of Liberty seated, holding the Phrygian cap on a staff, with the Argentine national coat of arms at her feet featuring the handshake symbolizing fraternity, the Phrygian cap of liberty, and laurel branches. This classical representation embodies the republican ideals of the Argentine nation. Printed by Casa de Moneda as indicated at lower left.

History

The Austral was introduced on June 15, 1985, replacing the Peso Argentino at a rate of 1 Austral = 1,000 Pesos Argentinos as part of the Austral Plan to combat hyperinflation. Despite initial success, hyperinflation returned and the Austral was itself replaced by the Peso Convertible in 1992 at 10,000 Australes = 1 Peso. This 50 Australes note represents a relatively low denomination from a period of severe monetary instability in Argentina.
