Front
Queen Elizabeth II (1926–2022), Queen of Canada from 1952 to 2022. This commemorative note was issued for the centennial of Canadian Confederation, marking 100 years since the British North America Act of 1867 united the provinces into the Dominion of Canada. The dates '1867 1967' appear prominently, along with a stylized centennial symbol consisting of triangles arranged in a maple leaf pattern.
Back
The original Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, as it appeared before the 1916 fire. Completed in 1866, this Gothic Revival structure housed Canada's first federal parliament when Confederation was achieved in 1867. The building depicted here was destroyed by fire on February 3, 1916; only the Library of Parliament survived. The current Centre Block, with its iconic Peace Tower, was completed in 1927.
History
This is part of the 1967 Centennial Series issued exclusively to commemorate Canada's 100th anniversary of Confederation. All denominations in this special series featured the dates '1867 1967' and the distinctive centennial emblem. The $1 note was particularly significant as it paired the reigning monarch with the historic parliament building where Confederation took shape. These notes were printed throughout 1967 and circulated alongside the regular 1954 'Devil's Face' and modified portrait series. The centennial series was withdrawn after 1967, making it a single-year issue. All signatures on this series are those of Bank of Canada Governor Louis Rasminsky and Deputy Governor Robert Beattie.
