Front

The National Emblem of the People's Republic of China at center, featuring Tiananmen Gate beneath five stars with sheaves of wheat and a cogwheel, symbolizing the unity of workers and peasants under Communist Party leadership. The emblem is framed by decorative geometric patterns. Text in five scripts appears along the bottom: Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur (Arabic script), Zhuang (Latin script), and Chinese characters, reflecting China's multinational character. Date 1980 printed below emblem.

Back

Yi and Korean ethnic minority women in profile, representing two of China's 55 officially recognized ethnic minorities. The Yi woman wears a traditional black and white headdress with ornamental silver pieces characteristic of Liangshan Yi costume, while the Korean woman is shown in traditional dress. This design is part of the Fourth Series theme of ethnic unity and China's diverse cultural heritage. The denomination 贰角 (2 jiao) appears at right.

History

The Fourth Series of renminbi was issued between 1987 and 1997, though notes bear dates from 1980, 1990, and 1996 depending on denomination. This series was notable for featuring ethnic minorities on several denominations to emphasize national unity and multiculturalism. The 2 jiao note specifically depicts Yi and Korean women. The series was gradually withdrawn starting in 2018 as the Fifth Series replaced it. This 1980-dated 2 jiao was among the first Fourth Series notes released in 1988.
