Front

St. Agnes of Bohemia (1211–1282), Czech princess, daughter of King Ottokar I of Bohemia, who rejected marriage proposals from European royalty to found a hospital and the Order of the Poor Clares in Prague. She was canonized in 1989. The inscription 'SVATÁ ANEŽKA ČESKÁ' identifies her. She appears wearing a nun's habit with a heart motif symbolizing charity and devotion. This note was issued by the Czech National Bank in 1993, the year of Czechoslovakia's peaceful dissolution into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Back

The Czech coat of arms featuring the quartered shield with the Bohemian lion (upper left and lower right), the Moravian eagle (upper right), and the Silesian eagle (lower left). The design includes a decorative letter 'A' at center, referencing St. Agnes (Anežka in Czech). The phrase 'VE TŘECH ROZENÍ ZKRONA' appears, meaning 'In the three countries, one crown,' referencing the historical Czech lands of Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia.

History

This 50 korun note belongs to the first series issued by the newly independent Czech Republic following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia on January 1, 1993. The series (1993–1999) featured Czech saints and historical figures. This denomination honors St. Agnes of Bohemia, who was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1989 shortly before the Velvet Revolution. The note was withdrawn from circulation and demonetized on April 1, 2011. Printed by Thomas De La Rue in England, it was designed by Oldřich Kulhánek with engraving by M. Ondráček.
