Front

Manuel Belgrano (1770–1820), Argentine economist, lawyer, politician and military leader who created the flag of Argentina in 1812 and led the Army of the North during the wars of independence. He is among the most honoured figures in Argentine history for his role in securing independence from Spain. The design includes native flora and a small figure of a revolutionary soldier with a drum at right. Text reads 'MANUEL BELGRANO BUENOS AIRES 1770-1820' and describes him as the hero of multiple battles including those in defense of the Patria.

Back

Scene depicting the creation of the Argentine flag by Manuel Belgrano on February 27, 1812, on the banks of the Paraná River near Rosario. Shows soldiers raising the blue and white flag with Belgrano on horseback. The inscription 'CREACIÓN DE LA BANDERA' commemorates this founding moment of Argentine national identity.

History

This note belongs to the Peso Convertible series introduced in 1992 to replace the Austral at a rate of 10,000 australes to 1 peso convertible, during the Convertibility Plan that pegged the peso 1:1 to the US dollar. The 10 peso denomination honours Manuel Belgrano, one of Argentina's founding fathers, and specifically commemorates his creation of the national flag in 1812. This series remained in circulation through the 2001–2002 economic crisis and subsequent devaluation. The design was produced by Casa de Moneda de la Nación Argentina and features enhanced security elements including watermarks, security thread, and intaglio printing.
