Front
Přemysl Otakar I (c. 1155–1230), King of Bohemia from 1198 to 1230, who secured hereditary kingship for the Přemyslid dynasty and made Bohemia a powerful kingdom within the Holy Roman Empire. He is honoured on this note as the first king to establish the Czech lands as a recognized kingdom. The seal visible on the left shows a royal figure, representing early Czech statehood under Přemyslid rule.
Back
The Crown of Bohemia (also known as the Crown of Saint Wenceslas), created in 1346 for Charles IV's coronation as King of Bohemia, alongside the quartered coat of arms of the Czech Republic showing the historical lions of Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. The crown is one of the oldest surviving coronation crowns in Europe and represents Czech sovereignty and the continuity of Czech statehood from medieval times.
History
This note belongs to the first series of Czech koruna banknotes issued following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia on January 1, 1993. The 20 korun note was first issued in 1994 and remained in circulation until 1999, when it was replaced by a modified design. This series emphasized Czech historical figures and national symbols to establish the identity of the newly independent Czech Republic. The printer, Státní tiskárna cenin (State Printing Works of Securities), produced all notes in this series domestically.
