Front
Juan Pablo Duarte (1813–1876), Dominican military leader, writer, and activist who is considered one of the Founding Fathers of the Dominican Republic. He founded the secret society La Trinitaria in 1838 to fight for Dominican independence from Haiti, which was achieved in 1844. Duarte is among the most revered figures in Dominican history and is honoured as the architect of the nation's independence. The front also features the coat of arms of the Dominican Republic at center, flanked by stylized guilloche patterns, with serial number E358743M appearing twice.
Back
Hydroelectric dam and irrigation infrastructure, depicting the Tavera Dam (Presa de Tavera) or similar hydroelectric and irrigation installation, representing the Dominican Republic's commitment to agricultural development and electrification. The scene shows a concrete dam structure with spillway gates, transmission towers, and the surrounding mountainous landscape with a reservoir, symbolizing the nation's investment in infrastructure and economic development during the late 20th century.
History
This 5 Pesos Oro note is from the Series 1993, issued by the Banco Central de la República Dominicana during a period of economic modernization. The Peso Oro (gold peso) was the official currency of the Dominican Republic from 1947 onwards. The 1993 series featured prominent national heroes and infrastructure themes, emphasizing both historical heritage and modern development. These notes were printed by the United States Banknote Corporation and remained in circulation until approximately 2000, when newer series with enhanced security features were introduced. The denomination commemorates Duarte alongside representations of the country's development achievements.
