Front
Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands (1880–1962), who reigned from 1890 to 1948 and led the Dutch government-in-exile during World War II. This note was issued by the Netherlands Indies Civil Administration (NICA) following the Allied liberation of the Dutch East Indies from Japanese occupation in 1943–1945. The front also features the crowned Dutch royal arms (lion rampant with sword and arrows) at left, with text identifying this as legal tender under Royal Decree of 2 March 1943, No. 1 STBL. D8.
Back
Legal text in Dutch and Malay (Javanese-influenced) warning of penalties under Articles 244, 245, and 249 of the Criminal Code for counterfeiting, possessing, or circulating forged banknotes. The denomination '50 CENT' appears in an ornate guilloche frame at center.
History
This NICA (Netherlands Indies Civil Administration) 50 cent note was part of an emergency currency series printed in the United States by American Bank Note Company for use in liberated areas of the Netherlands East Indies during and immediately after World War II. Issued under Royal Decree of 2 March 1943, these notes were introduced as Allied forces retook territory from Japanese occupation. The NICA currency circulated from 1943 until Indonesian independence was achieved in 1949–1950, when it was replaced by the Indonesian Rupiah. These notes represent a transitional period between colonial rule and Indonesian sovereignty.
