Front
Aram Khachaturian (1903–1978), Soviet-Armenian composer and conductor renowned for his ballets Gayane (featuring the Sabre Dance) and Spartacus. One of the most prominent composers of the Soviet era, his works incorporated Armenian folk music traditions and he remains a cultural icon of Armenia. The note also depicts the Armenian Opera and Ballet Theatre in Yerevan, where many of his works premiered.
Back
Armenian folk dancers performing a traditional dance with Mount Ararat visible in the background. Mount Ararat, though now in Turkey, holds profound symbolic significance for Armenians as the national symbol and legendary resting place of Noah's Ark. The dancers represent Armenia's rich folk heritage and performing arts tradition, which Khachaturian championed in his compositions.
History
Third dram series issued by the Central Bank of Armenia in 1998, part of the modernization of Armenian currency following independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The dram was introduced in 1993, replacing the Soviet ruble. This series honoured Armenian cultural figures and landmarks. The 50 dram note featuring Khachaturian was issued 1998 and withdrawn from circulation around 2001, replaced by a coin of the same denomination. This series marked Armenia's efforts to establish a stable national currency and celebrate its cultural heritage.
