Front

Imperial German Eagle (Reichsadler) with spread wings, crown above, shield on breast displaying the Prussian eagle, positioned at upper right within ornamental border. The Reichsadler was the heraldic symbol of the German Empire from 1871-1918, representing imperial authority. The note displays the text 'Reichsbanknote zwanzig Mark' with the date 'Berlin, den 21. April 1910' and states that the Reichsbank in Berlin pays the bearer 20 marks without legitimation check. Three signatures of Reichsbank directors appear below. Serial number G7384953 in red appears vertically on both left and right margins.

Back

Ornamental rosette design consisting of an elaborate guilloche pattern with the denomination '20' at center, surrounded by intricate geometric and floral motifs forming a symmetrical medallion. Serial number G7384953 repeated at top and bottom in red overprint. The design represents the sophisticated anti-counterfeiting printing techniques of the early 20th century German Reichsdruckerei.

History

This note belongs to the Reichsbanknote series issued from 1908-1914 by the German Empire's central bank, the Reichsbank. The 21 April 1910 date represents the authorization date printed on this series. These notes circulated during the final years of the German Empire and through World War I. The series was rendered essentially worthless by the hyperinflation of 1922-1923 and was officially demonetized with the introduction of the Rentenmark in 1924. The Reichsdruckerei in Berlin produced these notes with sophisticated intaglio printing and guilloche patterns to prevent counterfeiting.
