Front

Anak Gunung Krakatau (Child of Krakatau), the volcanic island that emerged in 1927-1930 from the caldera of Krakatau, which famously erupted in 1883. The scene depicts the active volcanic cone with smoke plume rising from its crater, symbolizing Indonesia's dramatic volcanic landscape and natural regeneration. The denomination 100 appears at upper left and lower right, with 'BANK INDONESIA' in ornate text at top. Serial number CCF235582 appears twice.

Back

Orchid flowers (likely Phalaenopsis amabilis, the national flower of Indonesia known as the 'moon orchid' or puspa bangsa) arranged in a spray against geometric patterns. The text 'SEPULUH RUPIAH' (ten rupiah) appears prominently, along with 'BANK INDONESIA' at top. Date 'DJAKARTA 1 DJANUARI 1959' and printer imprint 'THOMAS DE LA RUE & COMPANY, LIMITED' appear at bottom, with signature titles 'GUBERNUR' and 'DIREKTUR'.

History

This note belongs to the 1959 Rupiah series issued by Bank Indonesia, the first series printed after the dissolution of the United States of Indonesia and establishment of the unitary Republic of Indonesia. Dated 1 January 1959, this series was produced during the Guided Democracy period under President Sukarno. The notes were demonetized in 1965 during the currency reform that introduced the 'New Rupiah' at a rate of 1 New Rupiah = 1,000 old Rupiah to combat severe inflation. Printed by Thomas De La Rue in England, the series featured Indonesian natural landmarks and flora.
