Lake Toba (Danau Toba), the world's largest volcanic lake located in North Sumatra. The lake formed approximately 74,000 years ago following a supervolcanic eruption and is a major tourist destination and cultural site for the Batak people. The scene depicts the mountainous shores and waters of the lake, emphasizing Indonesia's dramatic volcanic geography and natural heritage.

Traditional stone jumping ceremony (Lompat Batu) from Nias Island, South Sumatra. This ancient ritual involves young men leaping over stone towers up to two meters high as a rite of passage demonstrating courage, agility, and readiness for warrior status. The practice originated in preparation for warfare and raids but has continued as a cultural tradition celebrating Nias indigenous heritage. The note shows a jumper mid-leap over a stone structure with traditional village buildings in the background.

History

Part of Bank Indonesia's 1992 series issued during President Suharto's New Order era. This series replaced the earlier 1980s designs with themes celebrating Indonesian natural wonders and indigenous cultures from across the archipelago. The 1000 rupiah was withdrawn from circulation on December 31, 2008, as part of Bank Indonesia's currency rationalization program. These notes were printed domestically by Perum Peruri (the Indonesian state printing company).
