Front
Teuku Umar (1854–1899), Indonesian national hero from Aceh who led guerrilla resistance against Dutch colonial forces during the Aceh War. He is honoured for his strategic military leadership and ultimate sacrifice in the struggle for Indonesian independence. The front features an ornamental design with birds and fish in a symmetrical arrangement surrounding a watermark window, with Indonesian text warning against counterfeiting and emphasizing legal tender status.
Back
Portrait of Teuku Umar wearing traditional Acehnese attire with a distinctive head covering (destar). The design includes the Garuda Pancasila (national emblem of Indonesia) at upper right, denomination numeral 5000 at left and right, and text 'LIMA RIBU RUPIAH' (Five Thousand Rupiah) with the year 1986. The note carries signatures of the Governor (Gubernur) and Director (Direktur) of Bank Indonesia, with printer notation 'PERUM PERCETAKAN UANG RI IMP.' indicating production by the Indonesian state mint.
History
Part of the 1986 series issued by Bank Indonesia during the New Order era under President Suharto. This series featured Indonesian national heroes and remained in circulation until being replaced by newer designs in the early 1990s. The 5000 rupiah denomination was significant during this period of Indonesia's economic development. Teuku Umar was chosen as a symbol of national resistance and unity, particularly representing the Acehnese contribution to Indonesian independence. The note was printed domestically by Perum Peruri (the Indonesian government printing corporation).
