Front
Menara Kudus Mosque tower in Central Java, one of Indonesia's oldest mosques dating to 1549. The tower displays a unique blend of Hindu-Javanese and Islamic architectural styles, reflecting the syncretic cultural heritage of Java during the spread of Islam. This architectural monument was designed by Sunan Kudus, one of the Wali Sanga (nine Islamic saints of Java), and remains an important pilgrimage site and symbol of religious harmony.
Back
Raja Sisingamangaraja XII (c.1849-1907), the last priest-king of the Batak people of North Sumatra and a national hero of Indonesia. He led a 30-year resistance against Dutch colonial expansion into the Batak highlands from 1878 until his death in battle in 1907. His struggle for independence made him a symbol of anti-colonial resistance, and he was posthumously declared a National Hero of Indonesia in 1961.
History
The 1987 series Indonesian rupiah notes were issued during the New Order period under President Suharto. This series featured various national heroes and cultural monuments to promote national unity and Indonesian identity. The 1000 rupiah note specifically honored Raja Sisingamangaraja XII and showcased the Menara Kudus mosque tower, representing Indonesia's diverse ethnic and religious heritage. These notes were withdrawn and replaced by the 1992 series as part of routine currency updates. The note includes the inscription 'DIREKSI' (Board of Directors) beneath the date 1987, confirming the directorate signatures of Bank Indonesia's leadership.
