Front

The national emblem of the Lao People's Democratic Republic at center, featuring the That Luang stupa encircled by rice sheaves, representing the nation's agricultural heritage and Buddhist identity. The front depicts an industrial scene with workers, power lines, and construction equipment, symbolizing Laos's modernization and infrastructure development. The That Luang is the most important national monument in Laos, a gold-covered Buddhist stupa in Vientiane dating to the 16th century.

Back

Agricultural scene depicting rice harvest with workers carrying baskets through rice paddies. The scene shows multiple figures engaged in traditional rice harvesting activities, representing Laos's predominantly agricultural economy and the importance of rice cultivation to the nation's food security and cultural identity. Rice farming remains the primary livelihood for the majority of the Lao population.

History

This note belongs to the 2011-2015 series of Lao kip banknotes issued by the Bank of the Lao P.D.R. following the modernization of the country's currency. The Lao kip has been the national currency since 1955 (reintroduced in 1979 after the establishment of the Lao People's Democratic Republic in 1975). The 500 kip denomination is a mid-range note in circulation. This series emphasizes themes of national development, combining traditional cultural symbols with images of industrial and agricultural progress.
