Front

Paghman Gardens arch in Kabul, a historic recreational site built in the early 20th century northwest of Kabul, featuring a triumphal arch that was a symbol of Afghan modernization during the reign of King Amanullah Khan. The gardens were extensively damaged during the Soviet-Afghan War and subsequent conflicts. The note features ornate geometric Islamic patterns in the corners.

Back

The Mausoleum of Ahmad Shah Durrani (1722–1772) in Kandahar, founder of the Durrani Empire and regarded as the founder of modern Afghanistan. The shrine, built in 1772, is one of Afghanistan's most important religious and historical sites, featuring distinctive blue-tiled domes. White doves are shown flying around the mausoleum, symbolizing peace. The serial number appears in Eastern Arabic numerals at upper right.

History

This note belongs to the SH1370 (Solar Hijri year 1370, corresponding to 1991–1992 CE) series issued by Da Afghanistan Bank during the final years of the Najibullah government and the early period of the Afghan Civil War. The 1000 Afghani denomination was issued to cope with high inflation during this turbulent period. This series was eventually replaced in 2002 with the new Afghani at a rate of 1000 old Afghanis to 1 new Afghani following the fall of the Taliban and establishment of the transitional government.
