Front
Tugu Peringatan Negara (National Monument) in Kuala Lumpur, a bronze sculpture designed by Felix de Weldon and completed in 1966 to commemorate those who died in Malaysia's struggle for freedom, principally during the Malayan Emergency and World War II. The monument depicts seven soldiers representing the struggle for independence and features a 15.54-metre-tall sculpture group. Inscription 'THOMAS DE LA RUE' appears at bottom left.
Back
Tuanku Abdul Rahman ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad (1895-1960), the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Supreme Head of State) of the Federation of Malaya, who served from 1957 to 1960. He was the seventh Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan and played a key role in Malaysia's independence. The portrait shows him wearing traditional Malay royal regalia with the distinctive tengkolok (ceremonial headgear). The denomination 'SATU RINGGIT' (One Ringgit) appears prominently.
History
This note belongs to the Fifth Series of Malaysian banknotes issued by Bank Negara Malaysia between 1986 and 1989. This series maintained traditional Malaysian iconography featuring the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong and national landmarks. The 1 Ringgit denomination was later replaced by coins in 1993, and these notes were gradually withdrawn from circulation and fully demonetized by 1999. The series was printed by Thomas De La Rue (as marked on the note) and featured advanced security features for its era. Serial number CL5536535 visible with prefix 'CL'. The note exhibits the deer (mouse-deer/kancil) emblem within a guilloche pattern at upper left, a common motif in Malaysian currency symbolizing alertness and agility.
