Front

General Aung San (1915–1947), Burmese revolutionary leader and founder of the modern Tatmadaw (Myanmar Armed Forces), who negotiated Burma's independence from British colonial rule. He served as the 5th Premier of the British Crown Colony of Burma in 1946–1947 before his assassination in July 1947, and is revered as the Father of the Nation. His portrait appears on virtually all denominations of Myanmar kyat banknotes issued after independence. The front features decorative geometric patterns including a stylized rosette at center.

Back

Chinthe, the mythical guardian lion of Burmese Buddhist temples and pagodas, depicted as a male figure wearing traditional Burmese military headgear. The chinthe is a symbol of strength and protection in Burmese culture, traditionally placed in pairs at temple entrances. The denomination 'ONE KYAT' is printed in English at lower right, with Burmese script appearing at center.

History

This 1 kyat note belongs to a series issued by the Central Bank of Myanmar following the country's transition from socialist economic policies in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The note was printed domestically at the Security Printing Works in Myanmar. The series featuring this design was issued from approximately 1990 to 1998, during a period of economic reform and the gradual opening of Myanmar's economy. General Aung San's portrait has been a constant feature on Myanmar banknotes since independence, reflecting his enduring status as the national hero. The note uses traditional Burmese decorative motifs combined with modern security features. Serial number analysis: The prefix 'PY' and red serial number are standard for this issue; no known serial-year encoding is documented for Myanmar kyat notes of this era. The 1 kyat denomination represented the lowest value note in circulation during this period.
