Front

Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands (1880–1962), who reigned from 1890 to 1948. During World War II she led the Dutch government-in-exile from London and became a symbol of Dutch resistance to Nazi occupation. This muntbiljet (coin note) series was issued by the Dutch government-in-exile and printed in the United States for use after liberation.

Back

Circular medallion with ornate guilloché patterns surrounding Queen Wilhelmina's portrait at center. The text reads 'UITGEGEVEN KRACHTENS KONINKLIJK BESLUIT VAN 4 FEBRUARI 1943, NO. 2' (Issued by Royal Decree of 4 February 1943, No. 2), indicating its wartime emergency issue status. The denomination 'EEN GULDEN' (one guilder) appears prominently with 'WETTIG BETAALMIDDEL' (legal tender) below.

History

This muntbiljet (coin note) was issued by the Dutch government-in-exile in London on 4 February 1943 during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. Printed by the American Bank Note Company in the United States, these notes were prepared for use after the liberation of the Netherlands. The series was part of the wartime currency preparation and circulated from 1943 to 1945, when post-war currency reforms replaced them. The 'muntbiljet' designation distinguishes these as state treasury notes rather than central bank notes. Serial prefix 'FD' indicates a specific print series within the 1943 issue.
