Front

Nigerian coat of arms at center right showing the eagle with two white horses as supporters and the motto 'UNITY AND FAITH' on a ribbon below. The coat of arms was adopted in 1960 at independence and represents the strength and unity of the Nigerian nation. The shield depicts the meeting of Nigeria's two main rivers, the Niger and Benue, forming a Y-shape.

Back

Herbert Macaulay (1864–1946), Nigerian nationalist, politician and engineer, known as the 'Father of Nigerian Nationalism'. He founded Nigeria's first political party, the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP) in 1923, and was a leading advocate for Nigerian independence from British colonial rule. He worked tirelessly for self-governance and social reform until his death.

History

This note belongs to the Second Naira series issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria from 1984 to 1991. The naira was introduced in 1973, replacing the Nigerian pound at 2 naira = 1 pound. This series was withdrawn and demonetized in 1991 as part of anti-corruption measures. Herbert Macaulay appears on both the front (in watermark area, implied by design convention) and back. The serial number format 'B/OO COO C 43 986886' follows the Central Bank of Nigeria's standard prefix/suffix system of the period, though no documented serial-year encoding is known for this issuer.
