John Redman Bovell (1855-1928), Barbadian agricultural scientist and botanist who founded the Barbados Department of Agriculture and is considered the father of the sugar cane industry in Barbados. He conducted pioneering research in tropical agriculture and plant breeding, introducing disease-resistant sugar cane varieties that transformed Caribbean agriculture. The coat of arms of Barbados appears at center-left, featuring the national motto 'Pride and Industry' and two pride of Barbados flowers flanking a bearded fig tree.

History

This note belongs to the 1986-1993 series issued by the Central Bank of Barbados, which replaced the earlier Barbados Government issues. The series featured prominent Barbadian historical figures and national landmarks. The 2-dollar denomination was withdrawn from circulation in 2013 when Barbados introduced polymer banknotes. The signature is that of Courtney Blackman, who served as Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados from 1973 to 1987. This paper series was replaced by polymer notes beginning in 2007, with the $2 denomination being among the last to transition.
