Front
Sultan Qaboos bin Said al-Said (1940–2020), Sultan of Oman from 1970 to 2020. He deposed his father in a palace coup and modernized Oman, ending the Dhofar Rebellion, abolishing slavery, and using oil revenues to build infrastructure and education. He is commemorated on Omani currency as the architect of modern Oman. The front shows the denomination '1' in Korean Hangul script ('일전', meaning 'one jeon'), which appears to be a mismatched element—this is actually an Omani 100 Baisa note with Arabic script, not Korean. The visible Arabic text reads 'مائة بيسة' (one hundred baisa).
Back
Sultan Qaboos bin Said al-Said wearing traditional Omani dress and turban. The inscription at top reads 'البنك المركزي العماني' (Central Bank of Oman), with denomination 'مائة بيسة' (one hundred baisa). The left side features a traditional Omani oasis scene with date palms and a falaj (traditional irrigation system), representing Oman's agricultural heritage and ancient water management systems that are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The national emblem of Oman (crossed khanjar daggers and sword) appears at upper left. Date printed as '1416 هـ / 1995 م' (1416 AH / 1995 CE).
History
This 100 Baisa note belongs to the fourth series of Omani currency issued in 1995 by the Central Bank of Oman. The Omani Rial is divided into 1000 baisa. Small denomination baisa notes (including 100 and 200 baisa) were gradually withdrawn from circulation in the 2000s as coins replaced them; by 2008 most baisa notes had been demonetized. The 1995 series featured enhanced security features and continued the tradition of honouring Sultan Qaboos, who ruled for 50 years until his death in 2020. Printed by Thomas De La Rue of London. Serial number visible: ج/٢٠٢٢٢٦٧١٥ (J/20222671[5]).
