Front

The front displays the coat of arms of Poland (crowned white eagle) with denomination 500 złotych and text 'PIĘĆSET ZŁOTYCH' along with 'BILETY NARODOWEGO BANKU POLSKIEGO SĄ PRAWNYM ŚRODKIEM PŁATNICZYM W POLSCE' (Notes of the National Bank of Poland are legal tender in Poland). However, this note exhibits a significant mismatch: the front shows 500 złotych denomination while the back shows 100 złotych dated 1 grudnia 1988 (December 1, 1988).

Back

Ludwik Waryński (1856-1889), Polish socialist politician, theoretician, and organizer, founder of the first Polish socialist party 'Proletariat' in 1882. He was arrested multiple times for revolutionary activities and died in the Shlisselburg Fortress. The back shows denomination '100 STO ZŁOTYCH' dated 'WARSZAWA 1 GRUDNIA 1988' (Warsaw, December 1, 1988), serial number TT 3243298, with signatures of Prezes (President) and Główny Skarbnik (Chief Treasurer) of Narodowy Bank Polski.

History

This note presents a significant anomaly: the front appears to be from a 500 złotych note while the back is clearly from a 100 złotych note dated December 1, 1988. Both belong to Poland's third złoty series (1982-1994), issued during the late Communist period when Poland experienced severe hyperinflation. The denomination printed on the back (100 złotych, 1988) takes priority as the authoritative identification since it includes the full date and complete design. Ludwik Waryński was featured on the 100 złotych note of this era. This currency was replaced by the new Polish złoty (PLN) in 1995 at a rate of 10,000 old złotych to 1 new złoty, following the redenomination that ended the hyperinflation period. The mismatched front and back indicate this is either a printing error, a composite/altered note, or the images are incorrectly paired.
