Front

Mieszko I (c. 930–992), the first historical ruler of Poland and founder of the Piast dynasty. He united the Polish tribes and converted to Christianity in 966, bringing Poland into the sphere of Western European civilization. The central circular medallion depicts a silver denar coin from his reign, the oldest Polish coin, symbolizing the beginnings of Polish statehood and economy.

Back

Mieszko I depicted in profile, facing left, wearing a crown and medieval regalia. The Polish coat of arms (crowned white eagle) appears at left. This note from the 2012 series celebrates Poland's medieval heritage and the founding ruler who established the Polish state and introduced Christianity, making the baptism of Poland a pivotal moment in European history.
