Front

Igreja de Santo António de Lisboa (Church of Saint Anthony of Lisbon) in Lisbon, built on the site where Saint Anthony of Padua was born in 1195. The Baroque church was reconstructed after the 1755 earthquake and is a major pilgrimage site. Santo António is Portugal's patron saint and one of the most venerated Catholic saints worldwide.

Back

Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage (1765–1805), Portuguese Neoclassical poet, considered one of the greatest Portuguese lyric poets. Known for his sonnets and satirical works, he lived a bohemian life in Lisbon and was briefly imprisoned for his liberal ideas. He is depicted seated with books and manuscripts, symbolizing his literary legacy. The text 'MANUEL MARIA BARBOSA DU BOCAGE' appears below the portrait.

History

This note belongs to the Ch.8 (Chapa 8) series issued by Banco de Portugal between 1978 and 1985. The date printed on the note is 'LISBOA, 2 DE SETEMBRO DE 1980' (Lisbon, September 2, 1980), indicating a 1980 issue within the series. The Ch.8 designation refers to the plate or design series variant. The 100 escudos denomination was a common mid-value note in circulation during Portugal's pre-euro era. The escudo was replaced by the euro in 2002, with a fixed conversion rate of 200.482 escudos = 1 euro. This note features the characteristic multicolor intaglio printing of Portuguese banknotes from this period.
