Front

Campephilus rubricollis, the red-necked woodpecker, a species native to South American rainforests including Suriname. This large woodpecker inhabits lowland tropical forests and is depicted prominently as a representative of Suriname's rich biodiversity. The note bears the date '1 JANUARI 2000' marking the millennium. The coat of arms of Suriname appears at upper center, featuring two indigenous figures flanking a diamond-shaped shield with a ship, palm tree, and star.

Back

Anthracothorax viridigula, the green-throated mango hummingbird, a species found in northeastern South America including Suriname. This hummingbird inhabits open woodland and gardens. The reverse also displays a traditional Maroon or indigenous art motif at left, representing Suriname's diverse cultural heritage. The back is dated '1 JANUARI 2000' and features the denomination '10' in the upper left corner.

History

This is the Suriname Dollar (SRD) millennium series introduced on 1 January 2000, replacing the Surinamese guilder at a rate of 1 SRD = 1,000 guilders during a currency reform to combat hyperinflation. The series featured native wildlife prominently, celebrating Suriname's natural heritage at the turn of the millennium. The 5-dollar note depicts the red-necked woodpecker (Campephilus rubricollis) on the front and the green-throated mango hummingbird (Anthracothorax viridigula) on the reverse. These notes circulated until 2012 when a new series was introduced. The visible serial number format and millennium date confirm the January 2000 issue. This Pick reference P-156 is well-documented as part of the 2000 dated series.
