History

Republic of Biafra series, 1968–1970. These notes were issued by the secessionist Republic of Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War after the region declared independence on May 30, 1967. The Bank of Biafra issued currency in pounds, shillings, and pence, replacing Nigerian pounds in the breakaway territory. The notes circulated until January 15, 1970, when Biafra surrendered and was reintegrated into Nigeria. All Biafran currency was immediately demonetized. These notes are now collectible artifacts of the short-lived republic and are sought after for their historical significance in documenting the Nigerian Civil War.
