Front
Palm tree with rising sun at center, symbol of Biafra representing hope and renewal for the secessionist state. The coconut palm was chosen as an emblem of the short-lived Republic of Biafra (1967–1970), which declared independence from Nigeria during the Nigerian Civil War. The denomination is prominently displayed in ornate guilloche medallions at left and right, with serial number DT0075522 appearing twice.
Back
Coat of arms of the Republic of Biafra at center right, featuring a golden rising sun, two seahorses as supporters, and the motto 'Peace Unity Freedom' on a ribbon beneath a shield. The arms symbolized the aspirations of the breakaway state. A blank watermark area appears at left, with ornamental guilloche work throughout and denomination 'ONE POUND' in banner at bottom.
History
The Biafran pound was the currency of the Republic of Biafra from 1968 to 1970, issued during the Nigerian Civil War following Biafra's secession on 30 May 1967. The Bank of Biafra was established to issue this currency, which was printed by De La Rue in the United Kingdom. The series ceased to have legal tender status when Biafra was reintegrated into Nigeria on 15 January 1970 following the republic's military defeat. These notes are historically significant as artifacts of the attempted secession and humanitarian crisis that resulted in widespread famine. The 1-pound note was among the most common denominations issued.
